Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sears Craftsman Electric Start Lawn Mower Wont Start, sears craftsman, recoil starter

Question
Hello,
I have an old Sears Craftsman Electric Start gas mower, 4.5 22", Model 917 374700.  I do NOT have a manual for the mower (Google & Sears web sites not effective), and was looking for an alternate way to start the thing up.  When electronic switch pressed (after priming, etc.), there is no cranking, suggesting that the battery is bad or uncharged. It does have a pull cord, but no instructions for alternate starting without relying on battery.

Any suggestions? Many thanks.

Answer
 Hello Mark:

Go to the Sears Addy http://www3.sears.com/ and Select the Lawn Equipment Box. Then Enter the Model Numbers 143.384152. This is the Model of the Engine on the Frame. Then Verify the Engine and Click Continue. Then Select View Diagram of the Recoil Starter. The Recoil Starter Doesn't Engage because the Starter Dogs/Pawls are Frozen from Non-Use and Need to be Cleaned and Lubricated. You will need to Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). Then Remove the Retainer Screw, Diagram #1 and Carefully Lift the Retainer, Diagram # 2 Off the Pulley. Clean and Lubricate the Components Under the Retainer. The Dogs/Pawls Should Extend Out when the Rope is Pulled and Retract when the Rope is Released. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks. Be Safe.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
