Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda G65 timing?, distributor cam, happy thanksgiving

Question
Dear John

I have just rebuilt a Honda G65 stationary engine:
ground valves, adjusted tappet clearance, honed cylinder, new rings etc, stripped and cleaned carby, new gaskets, checked everything.

I set the point clearance as per specs, and the engine fired on the first pull and sat there idling very smoothly! So far so good... I let it idle for a minute of two then set the speed to around 1500rpm for a couple of minutes, varying the speed to try and let the rings bed in well.

After getting thoroughly warmed up, the engine started missing slightly... I tweaked the idle mixture but it didn't help and it seemed to be running too hot.

I suspect the ignition timing is not correct... I have the factory manual which says to align the F mark on the flywheel magneto (20-22 deg BTBC)at this point the points should just be closing to allow the spark to travel to the plug.

My question is on a magneto system (without the ability to rotate the points plate in relation to the distributor cam as in a normal engine) how do i keep the points clearance correct if adjusting them to close on the F mark?

How can I rig up a test light to check if there is continuity as the flywheel reaches the F mark?

Any help gratefully appreciated!

Cheers

Graeme

Answer
 Hello Graeme:

Check the Valve Lash. The Miss Started when the Engine Warmed Up. This is Usually a Sign of the Valve Lash being Set to Tight. Loosen Up the Lash by .002in and Run the Engine Again. Usually I set the Valves .002in Over what the OEM Specifies and this will Allow for Seat In. Don't Do Anything with the Contact Set Yet. If the Contact Set had been Wrong, the Miss Would Have been in the Engine Even when Cold. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require More Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
