Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): stx38 John Deere, john deere stx38, stx38 john deere

I have recently acquired a John Deere STX38 tractor/mower. I can start the engine fine, and it runs fine, until I move the gear selector from neutral. I don't engage the clutch, just move the gear selector and the engine dies. Where should i look for a solution?

 Hello Dale:

 Check the Seat Safety Switch. Disconnect the Switch and Jumper the Harness. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Mower at this Addy http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers.
