Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 3.5HP B&S Pacer Pump stopped running, mixture control, govenor

Question
It's a 91232, code 50310YA, Type 1323. So it has the air flap governor with the wire bale going to the throttle from the plastic flap. This unit is only a year old and hasn't been used more than 25 times, so there's no buildup in the carb. I went and got a new membrane for the carb and now it is running much better but still backfires a bit after warmup at top speed. If I close the choke a bit I can get the backfiring to stop and it runs smooth again, even under load of pumping water. The governed rpm's are a bit slower than before due to my tweaking that wire around, can't seem to get then back up to where they were when I bought it new a year ago. So if you know the steps to adjust that properly it would be a big help. I don't see any real mixture control on the carb, seems to be a fixed jet on the right hand side?

This weekend I'm going to look at the 91232 that this replaced 'cause it quit too, but it was over 7 years old when it did. Probably just needs a membrane too ... that's why I bought 2 ;)

Thanks for your help.
varying with some backfiring. I know I have the 2 springs hooked up right, but the long wire arm going to the air flap may have gotten bent from where it was. Not sure how to adjust it back for a smooth runing speed. Not sure if the backfiring is 'cause of something else. Pretty new engine with low hours ... I think the problem started 'cause of sitting too many months, but this is the 1st time in 7 years (this is second pump) I've seen this issue.

I guess I need to mostly know how to adjust this type of govenor, and then deal with the b/f if it's still there.

Thanks in advance!

 Hello Brad:

From your Description it Sounds like the Carburetor is Still Dirty or the Governor is Out of Adjustment. When you Removed the Carburetor, Did you Remove the Governor Arm from the Governor Shaft? Did you Disassemble the Carburetor and Soak it Overnight in Carburetor Cleaning Solution and then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air? Did you Install New Kit? I Require the Type Numbers Off of the Engine to Locate a Breakdown of this Engine and Carburetor. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what happens, Please. Thanks.

 Hello Brad:

Thanks for the Model Numbers. With this Style of Governor there is Not Much Worry about Bending the Metal Linkage. If the Linkage is Shortened too Much it will Cause the Engine to Over Rev and the Engine will Backfire. If the Engine is Running at or Close to the Normal RPM's and the Carburetor is Clean, then the Only Other Possible Causes will be a Burnt Valve (Carbon Stuck to the Valve Seat) or The Intake Valve Lash needs Adjusting. Adjusting the Valve Lash will Require Removal of the Cylinder Head. A Damaged Flywheel Key will Through the Spark Plug Timing Off at High RPM's Causing the Backfire. Has the Engine Suddenly Stopped for Any Reason? If Yes, then Check the Flywheel Key. If No, then because of the Run Time on the Engine, I'm Still Thinking the Carburetor. Hope this Helps.
