Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Fuel Leak, briggs stratton engine, mtd snowblower

Question
I recently filled the tank on my MTD snowblower with a Briggs& Stratton engine, The next couple of days the garage smelled of gasoline.  I found the the gas tank was empty.
I removed the tank, filled it with water and found no leaks,
inpsected the hose, it was OK.
When I looked at the carb, The fuel bowl had a screw with a spring exposed. I pushed on the spring and gas leaked out.
Is this screw supposed to be screwed into the bottom of the bowl?

Answer
Not too many Briggs use the spring style carburetor bowl drain as you described...these are more common on Tecumseh Snow King engines.

In either case most likely the carb inlet needle is not sealing.  Check you oil level.  If the oil level is too high and the oil smells like gasoline then the inlet needle leaked.

You need to change and refill the oil if it smells like gas.  You should also replace the inlet needle and seat or install a fuel shut-off valve in the fuel line and turn the fuel off when you store the snow blower.  By shutting off the fuel you will prevent the carb inlet needle from leaking.  Installing a valve is easy and I would recommend installing one if there isn't a shut off valve in the fuel line.

Let me know if this helps.
