Question
Thanks John,  I have the same diagrams in my owners manual.  What springs are you referring to and how do I check them.  Thanks, Randy

Question -
My Murray 42572x8A riding mower has a drastic decrease in forward and reverse speed.  The engine sounds solid.  I adjusted the speed control pedal, which did regain some reverse speed that had gon totally out.  I then adjusted the motion drive belt - nothing.  The motion drive belt looked in good condition, but I thought it was worth a try, so I replaced it.  The V-Idler pulley and other Idler pulley appear in good shape so I believe it will be a waste of time to switch those out.  I am wondering if the problem may be coming from the transaxle.  I jacked up the back end of the mower to get a better look and happened to spin a back tire.  They both spend in opposite directions.  Is this normal or have I identified the problem.  Sorry for the loooong question. - Randy

 Hello Randy:

You can View a breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Addy http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Click Parts Look Up. Then Select the OEM(Murray) and Enter the Model Numbers 42572x8a and Click Search. Then Double Click on the Model in the Search Results Area. This will Open a New Window for you to View the Breakdown/IPL. Is the Belt Tight when the Clutch is Released? Have the Springs Been Checked for Proper Tension? If Just 1 of the Springs Get Weak this Problem will Occur. The Transaxle is Supposed to do as you Described. Turn 1 Wheel and the Other Turns the Opposite Direction. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Answer
 Hello Randy:

The Springs are Diagram Numbers 23, 34 and 53. Also Check the Piviot Plate for Binding. The Shoulder Bolt (diagram #12) May be Worn. Have Someone Move the Clutch Pedal while you Inspect the Linkage from the Pedal to the Piviot Plate. If this Linkage is Binding or Worn it Will Cause this Problem. Check the Transaxle Mounting Bolts and Ensure the Bolts are Tight and the Frame hasnt Cracked or Broken. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.
