My Bolens 4.5 B&S push mower starts great (only 3 summers old) but has developed and idle problem and won't STOP 90% of the time when I release the safety arm on the handle! It'll run 'stopped' for 10 minutes until the idle slows enough for it to conk off.  There is no engine speed control lever on this model.  I cleaned and adjusted the contact point on the back of the motor for the safety lever, but that only fixed the problem once. The last time I tried to stop it, the motor started clanking and smoked like it overheated?  Any ideas?

 Hello J.R.:

Check the Shutoff Wire to the Coil from the Shutoff Switch. If this wire is Broken, it will Not Ground the Coil and Shutoff the Engine. Send me the Model, Type and Code Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. With these Numbers I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more  Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

Answer
 Hello J.R.:

The Contact Point you Cleaned should have a Wire from it to the Coil. This is the Wire you need to Check. Briggs Doesnt Offer a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine for Online Viewing as of Yet. The Noise you were Hearing was the Engine Brake. Remove the Blower Housing(metal engine cover). This will give you Access to the Coil wire and the Engine Brake. If the Wire to the Coil is Good, then Replace the Cutoff Contact. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.
