Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler 16 hp engine, crankcase oil, hp engine

Question
I have a Craftsman LT 1000 mower with a 16 hp  ohv Kohler engine:

Model #  CV460S
Spec #   26509
Serial #  3034205363

The mower started when I took it out the other day.  I got to the edge of the driveway and tried to engage the  mower.  I then saw smoke coming from underneath the engine.  I shut it off and looked for leaks etc. In retrospect the smoke may have been exhaust  but there was quite a bit.  Since then, it will not restart. It turns over and almost starts, but won't run.  I replaced the sparkplug and air filter but there is no difference.  There does not seem to be any condensation in the gas tank.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
 Hello Rick:

Check the Crankcase Oil. Does it Smell of Gas? Check the Compression. What Color was the Smoke; Black, White or Blue? The Headgasket May have Blown. Send me the Model Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
