Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsmans 18.5 HP -flywheel wont turn, amp fuse, jumper wire

Question
Curt,
Thanks so much for the help so far.  The specs on the engine are B/S Model 31P777, type 0348C1; Code 04331ZD; 18.5 hp, electric start.  This engine has 2 pulleys/2 belts on the lower end.  Shouldn't be a problem installing if the timing is preset. I found this web site for engines.  What do you think? I live in central Texas.

I did the procedures you suggested and the ignition is okay.  However, upon further examination, the flywheel is seised and will not budge.  I think the engine might have thrown a rod or just seized up on the shaft.  I removed the starter and tried to turn the flywheel with a large breaker bar and no luck.  It is frozen.

Model 917.273634.  Lawn tractor stopped while mowing, had blown a 20 amp fuse.  Replaced the fuse and attempted to start, but it blew again.  I replaced the solanoid; no help.  I took the starter loose and jumped it; starter runs great.  The ring gear or flywheel on top of the engine will not turn with a wrench and lots of torque.  On the lower end the drive pully will turn.  Any hope for this engine.  I was quoted $1,000 for replacement.  Battery terminals are clean and tight and has a good charge.  The machine is 2 1/2 years old.

Hi, sorry for the delay!
It dose not sound to good! Dose the fuse blow as soon as you turn the ignition?  When you jumped the starter did the flywheel turn at all? take the wire harness of the back of the ignition & look for the red wire coming from the solinoid to the harness & take a jumper wire and touch it ti the white wire coming to the harness. what you are doing is hot wireing it to make sure there is not an ignition problem!
Let me no what happens I'm very intrested, & we will go from there

Hi, Yes it is not good! alot of times when they throw a rod it will crack or break through the housing of the engine! If you email me your type & code on the engine I will check some differnt places on a price for a  new motor for you! If you think you can install it?
