Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snapper RER oil problem, hp engine, carburator

Question

Hi John,
Re: 1989 Snapper 25" rear engine riding mower, Model 25066, with Tecumseh 8 HP engine,TVM140 70895L SER9067D. Bought the mower used July 22, 2006.

Question: The mower is usally stored in the upright position when not being used. Yesterday when I took the mower out and started it up, a big plume of white smoke came out of the exhaust.
I looked at the exhaust and saw oil in the pipe.
After the mower ran for a short while and burned off the oil, the smoke cleared. The engine runs pretty good for its age and has power. I don't think oil would be in the exhaust if the mower was stored in its operating position. Snapper says its okay to store their RER in the stand up
position, so my question is, why does oil leak into the exhaust system?

Thanks.

Answer
 Hello Calvin:

Check the Oil for a Gas Smell. If it Smell of Gas, then Drain the Crankcase and Allow the Crankcase to Vent for 24 hrs and Install a Cutoff Valve in the Gas Line to the Carburator. The Float Needle in the Craburator has Leaked Gas into the Cylinder and Crankcase, causing it to become Overfilled and Leaking out the Exhauxst Valve into the Muffler. Send me the Model Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. With these Numbers I May be Able to Locate a Breakdown of the Engine and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully
