Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): engine starts and holds back, briggs and stratton, head gasket

Question
Hello, John Thanks for your help.

I checked the keyway and it was good. I loosened the exhaust pipe and checked the muffler no blockage. I doubt the head gasket as when I checked the compression it tested 150 psi. The valve seemed to be working and in adjustment. It still spins freely when the plug is removed but tries to start and then hold back when the plug is installed. I am just about at my witts end. any ideas? Thanks Frank.

Hello, I have a riding mower. It is a briggs and stratton 17 horse power oherhead valve engine model 311707 type 0132-e1,code 99061520. 2001 sears lawn tractor

The problem is that the engine starts to turn and then holds back. It has a new battery and starter. If you remove spark plug engine spins over easily.

Answer -
 Hello Frank:

Is the Engine Overfilled with Oil? Check the Valve Lash( Clearance between the rocker arm and the valve stem). Check for a Blown Headgasket. Check the Flywheel Key. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck

Answer
 Hello Frank:

Check the Valve Lash(clearance between the Valve Stem and the rocker arm). Most times I have found Either the Flywheel Key or the Valves to be the Cause of this Problem. Did you Remove the Flywheel to Check the Flywheel Key? You cannot Properly Check the Key without Removing the Flywheel. Check the Wires from the Battery to the Solenios and Soleniod to the Starter. Even though the Starter is New, have it Load Tested. I have had Many Starters Bad right Off the Shelf. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance.

 Good Luck
