"Thank the Lord it's the end of the season, 'cause my tractor is a tired pup!
I have a 13 yr old Montgomery Ward 14 HP tractor. Last week I had to change a spindle shaft because of worn bearings. I also changed the starter drive.... cost $85

Now, this week..... I was mowing right along and things were going great with the new parts. Suddenly the tractor started missing and backfiring. I just barely got it back to the garage. I parked it because it was getting late. Today I had a heck of a time getting it started and all it wants to do now is backfire through the carb. I finally got it started.. it did a lot of missing and backfiring, then settled down to a nice idle. I tried to give it some gas, and it backfired, missed, and tried to stall out.

Today I took the carburetor off and sprayed it thoroughly with carb cleaner and put it back on.
It still wants to is backfire through the carburetor, and it's not starting.  This makes no sense to me.  I have installed a new plug and a new fuel filter.  Still no change.  Can these motors just jump timing as you're driving along?  It was running great!

This is the first time in 13 years I have had any engine/carb issues with this tractor.

Its a B&S 14 HP   Model series 287700

Any help would be appreciated.

 Hello Jackie:

Check the Valve Lash(air gap between the Valve Stem and the Rocker Arm for Proper Clearence. There May be Carbon Stopping the Valve from Seating Properly. The Coil May be Going Bad. You can View a Breakdown of this Engine at http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Click on the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Dont have Part Numbers. Then Scroll Down to the #28 and Click on it. Then Scroll Down to the 287700 File and Click on it. This will Download a Breakdown of this Engine. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck

Hi John  :-)

Before I even attempt on dismantling down to the valves, I am going to try my neighbors coil on my tractor.  She has the identical engine on her lawn tractor. If that doesn't help I will contact you about checking the valve lash.
I will then be asking what the valve lash clearance is for this particular engine?  And could you provide some easy directions on how to check it.  I'm assuming that you would use feeler gauges, right?

Thanks so much!
Jackie

 Hello Jackie:

No Worries. When you are Ready to Check the Valves, just let me know. The Air Gap for the Coil is .020in. A Feeler Gauge is Required for the Valves. A Side Panel of a Pepsi or Coke 24pk Can Drink Carton makes a Good Gauge for the Coil Setting. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

Hey John!  :-)  My Man!

I put on the coil from my neighbors tractor, gapped it at .020 as you said, and she started right up!!!!  She is purring like a kitten now and I am so happy that you could get me rolling again.  Having you around is like having a mechanic in the house!  You saved me a ton of time AND money.  I cannot thank you enough, my man!  Next spring I plan on checking the valves out, and I'm sure I'll be asking you for help on that with any adjustments I will need.

Now I have to go mow some serious lawn....(about 4 acres)

Thanks again, my friend!
