Sorry that it has take a while to get back, but other things pushed the lawnmower to the back burner.  I did finally tear down the carb.  All things considered, it didn't look anywhere near as bad as I expected.  Put it all back together, and it still did the same thing.  As it would be a while before I'd be able to get back to it, they'll be taking it into a service shop for repair.  I'll post what they do.

Question -
My dad has a Craftsman Model #: 917.378430 Engine Model #: 143.016718 that he recently could not get started, even with the electric start.  It is getting spark, and if I block off about 75% of the carb inlet it will start and run fine.  The only adjustment I could find was behind a ribber plug on the side of the carb., but that didn't seem to change anything.  Gas tank was full of fresh gas.  Any ideas?  Thanks, Dick

Answer -
 Hello Dick:

From your Description I suggest the Carburator be Cleaned and Rebuilt. By Closing the Choke Part Way you Draw the Gas through the Choke Port and Not through the Main Jet. The Main Jet is Restricted with Varnish that the Gas Forms and Trash/Water from the Gas Tank. Clean the Tank and Fuel Lines. You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Addy http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Click on the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Dont have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers 143.016718 and Search. Hope this Helps I am here to help if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck
