Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere L110, gasoline smell, sectional view

Question
I'm having trouble with my John Deere L110.  This is my 3rd summer.  The display reads 44.6.  In the bottom of the window blinks SYC ---  SYC and there a symbol resembling an hour glass on the left of the screen.

Symptoms:  After mowing for about 30-45 minutes, the engine shuts down.  It would turn over but not start.  At first I thought I was out of gas, but I was not.  After I leave it sitting for several hours, it started again, but would only run for a few minutes.  Large volumes of smoke and a strong gasoline smell emerged on starting.

I have changed the oil at the beginning of each moving season, but otherwise have not had it serviced.

Any ideas?

Answer
 Hello Wayne:

You can View this Mower at this Addy http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers. Click Find. Then Click on the Model in the Results Area. Then Select Sectional View. Then Select Electrical. Then Click Flywheel, Ignition Coil and Stator. You need to Check the gas Tank Cap and ensure it is Venting the Tank Properly. If the Cap is Venting, then Run the Mower Until it Quits. Check for Fire at the Plug as Soon as the Mower Quits, If No Fire, then the Coil is Bad. These are the Most Likely Causes for the Problem you described. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck
