Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starter, soleniod, windings

Question
I have a b&s 14.5hp ohv on a Murray riding mower.  when I try to start it the starter turns over very slow and the red wire gets very hot.  I can let it set for a few minutes and try again, and then it usually starts.  I can run the mower for 15 min or so and then when I start it the starter turns over at normal speeds.  I replaced the battery and solinoid, do I now need to replace the starter?

Answer
 Hello Don:

Replace the Battery to Soleniod and the Soleniod to the Starter Wires with a Larger Size Wire. I use Automotive Battery Wires. Some Small Engine Shops Carry the Larger Wire too. The Starter is Dragging. This Happens When a Starter is Used over a Period of Time and is Not Receiving the Proper AMPs During the Starter Operation. The Larger Wire will Accomadate the AMPs that the Starter Require and Not Burn Out the Starter. Replace the Starter. Now that the Starter is Dragging, you Heat up the Starter by Trying to Start the Engine. Once or Twice the Engine Turns Slowly, This is Heating Up the Starter. Now the Starter Turns Properly and the Engine Turns Fast enought to Start. When you Stop During a Job and Cut the Engine Off. It will Take a Good 6 to 8 Hrs for the Engine and Starter to Cool enough for the Starter to Drag Again. I Dont Suggest a Rebuild. The Windings and the Armature have been Heated and will Cause Problem Later. I Suggest you Price a Starter Locally and then Go to this Site http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Price a Starter Plus Shipping from them. I try to Price Items through Aa Few Online Suppliers and this Site is About the Best do far. You can also call Michelle @Outdoor Distributors @ 205-669-2500 for Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck
