Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S Intek55 misses when hot at idle, spark plug gap, valve tappets

Question
Hi John,

Found it to be the Ignition - it's weak.
Neon timing lightconnected in series - no start when hot.
vs Timing light Plus spark gap on old 5HP - works.
So coil replace on Intek as faulty.
What a weird fault in the end. Normally Magnetos work or they don't this one really makes me laugh afterwards as it's so unusual.

Regards,

Martin

Question -
B&S Intek55 Model 124602 011101 030725 FA
Intermitant misses when hot at idle / lower rpm range.
Stored at dealer for number of years dry never started "brand new".

Engine now has now 5 hours on it,
Cold Starts/Runs/Idles/Power - 100% Perfect,
Hot Starts/High speed run/Power  - 100% Perfect,
Cold/Hot Acceleration - 100% Perfect no hint of stumble,
Hot - after 20mins, Idleing +150RPM above idle has random intermintant misses / stumle.

Problem since new ....
Tried the following:
1. Changed Spark plug brands to NKG - gap 0.5mm (0.020")
2. Adjusted valve tappets clearences to spec.
0.15mm (0.006")6mm (1/4") past TDC.
3. Changed Main jet from one stamped 'U' (BSP-498978) to one stamped 'W' BSP-498981 as it was running too rich Unit has remote air cleaner, Now with W jet if you disconnect remote air cleaner it runs rough as it's too lean, connected it's about perfect.
Problems appears to be about the same after each step.

I've run out of ideas?
Is it the spark gap or some weird fueling issue.

Your thoughts John would be much appreciated as this is one is most unusual

 Hello Martin:

1- Spark Plug Gap: .035in. 2- Valve Lash Settings: With the Piston at TDC. Set the Intake Valve Lash .010in. and the Exhaust Valve Lash .013in. I have found that the Valve Lash Specification are too Close and Some Engines have a Miss at Idle when Hot and Set to OEM Specifications. They also have a Tendancy to Burn the Valves More Often too. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck
