Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): JD STX 38 shift linkage adjust?, shift linkage, vertical shift

Question
When the transmission on my STX38 is in neutral, the shift lever indicates "2". I'm aware that the plastic block under the seat allows adjustment, but it's all the way back, and I need another 3/8-1/2 inch. I'm pretty sure the lever is not bent. I think the vertical shift shaft in the transmission is square, so it won't allow a raw adjustment to move the linkage forward. What am I doing wrong? What is the adjustment procedure?

Answer
 Hello Ken:

If the Adjustment Block Doesnt Allow enough Movement in the Shifter, then the Shifter Is Bent Either Inside the Transaxle or Outside (shifter arm/lever). If the Outside Shifter Arm(lever) isnt Bent, then the Pin on the Shifter Fork Inside the Shifter is Bent or Worn to Allow the 3/8 to 1/2" Misalignment of the Shifter Arm(lever). You can Wiew a Breakdown of the Mower at this Addy http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thnaks.
