Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Electric PTO wont engage., adjustable clutch, mower deck

Question
John,
This is what I did.  First I used an air gun to blow out the PTO.  Then I sprayed carb cleaner into the PTO.  Blew it out with air again.  Sucess.  At least for now.  PTO engauges and works great.  Weather or not that is a long term fix only time will tell.  But it was cheaper than buying a new PTO for $150.00.  Thanks again for the advice if the clutch fails again I will follow your suggestion.

Problem as follows.  When re-engauging the mower deck (44") after the mower has been in use (10-15 min) the PTO will not enguage.  You can hear it try to work, (rubbing sound) but it will not spin the blades.  This is with engine at full speed.  I replaced the mower drive belt. I thought that may be slipping.  Didn't help.  If I drop the engine speed to just above idle it will then work and spin blades.  Speed up the engine from that point and all is well.  BUT, this tends to snap the belts.  My question is: Can I repair the PTO?  Or is it a replacement item.
Thanks in advance,
Eric

 Hello Eric:

The PTO May Be Adjustable. I Never Suggest Rebuilding a PTO. You are Better to Replace the PTO. Your Problem Sounds like the Clutch has Worn and needs to be Adjusted. If it is the Adjustable Clutch, I Suggest you Have it Adjusted at a Repair Shop. Without the Proper Gauges, it is Almost Impossible to Adjust Properly. You can go to this Addy http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Click on Parts Look Up. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Number.
