Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Riding Lawn Tractor Dies, briggs and stratton, jumper wire

Question
I don't understand what you mean by jumpering.
Jumpering what to what? And where are all
the safety switches located? Is there a
schematic online for this unit?

Craftsman 42" 6 Speed Lawn Tractor
15.5 HP OPV
Briggs and Stratton TurboCool
Model 917.258470
S/N 101796D    002407

Engine
Model - 28N707
Type - 0173-01
Code - 961014ZE

System starts normally (and powerfully).
Then when letting out the clutch/brake the
engine dies. Before the engine dies if the pedal is again depressed then the engine revs normally again. All connections appear to be tight (disconnected and reconnected all of them). Purchased used 2 months ago and this is the only real problem we have encountered. Otherwise, what a powerful mower :)  A friend thinks that it might be one of the safety switches (sort of acts like this) but for the life of me I am unable to find the fix :(

Hi Brent,

If the engine quits as if the key is turned off, then I would agree that a safety switch is faulty.  One is located in the seat and one connected to the clutch/brake pedal or it's linkage.  You can test them by bypassing with a jumper wire.

Let me know how you make out.

Answer
Hi Brent,

I don't know where you can find a schematic for your tractor.
You will need to look for the switches.  Follow the wiring to the areas I mentioned.  When you find one, disconnect the 2 wires attached to it and "jump" them together with a test lead, which has alligator clips on each end or use a piece of electrical wire.  That will bypass the switch for testing purposes.

Good luck.
