Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh unreliable spark, coil resistance, air gap

Question
Hello John,

Actually the engine is from a 2 stage snowblower. I had already replaced it with a 7 hp from another unit last winter ... it works a lot better with more power. The 5 hp that I was working on was garbage but it was the principle of the thing. The engine had been taken apart "many" times in various shops and home garages. I believe I found the original problem ... the timing was set at .080 (which is normal for Tech engines) instead of .035. The cylinder wall was badly scored and someone had allready put in a .010 oversize piston. I cleaned it up with a flapwheel on a drill, just to get it going. I ran it for about 15 minutes and the crankshaft was too hot to touch!!!! I scrapped it and kept the good parts for future projects. I do this just as a hobby now ... but I just can't quit until I solve the problem.
It was very nice to have someone else to discuss this with, as you know repair shops and dealers can be very secretive!!!!

Thanks Again!!!!

Hello John,

Finally got a chance to work on that engine. I put the new condenser in another engine with the same results. I purchased another condenser and all is working.
Thanks for your help!!

Question -
Hello John,

I have a Tecumseh HS50-67074 ser# 42280.
The engine (& snowblower) came as a "gift" from my neighbor who bought a new unit after many years of taking this one to the shop.
The engine does not produce a reliable spark. New points set @ .020", air gap @ .020, coil resistance .5 ohm. When a spark is produced it will easily jump 3/8" on my spark tester. It is the normal bright blue in color. I noticed that the condenser was shorter when I installed the new ignition kit. I tried one from another unit with the same results. Is there a method to test these? Is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks,
      Morris

 Hello Morris:

Did you Scratch the Contact Surfaces of the Points Before you Installed them? The Contacts have a Film Over them that if Not Removed with Emory Cloth or Fine Sand Paper(I use my wifes finger nail file)they Sometimes Dont make a Good Contact. Get Rid of the Point Set. Install a Nova Ignition Module. This Module comes with Directions on how to Disconnect the Old Point Set and Install the Ignition Module. I have Always had Problems with the Condensors on the Tecumseh Engines and Found that the Solid State Ignition is Better. This Module is a Rotary Corp Number 8786. You can Purchase it Online from http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ or Call Michelle at 205-669-2500 and give her the Part Number and she can Help you with the Price and the Shipping Cost. Some Small Engine Repair Shops also Carry this Module. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I Enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck
