Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere 116, engine model type, electric fuel pump

Question
I am attempting to resurrect a JD 116 lawn tractor with a B & S two cylinder engine. I starts and runs with jumper cables in place, but dies when jumper cables are removed. Any information would be appreciated. I grew up driving JDs ranging from the 430 "popper" to the 4630 with "sound guard body." This is my first attempt at working on a lawn size tractor.
Thanks

Answer
Is the mower battery still connected when it stalls.

I can't think of any Briggs engine that has an automotive style coil.  My point is that the engine should run with or without a battery.

Do you have the engine model, type and code number?
I don't believe the 116 has an electric fuel pump but you may want to check for one; look in the tank and follow the fuel line from the tank to the carb.

Let me know.
