Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mccullough string trimmer, spark arrestor, string trimmer

Question
Hello,

I have a Mccullogh string trimmer that I let get wet and the magneto got rust on it. Before I cleaned it there was no spark at all. I then removed the magneto and thoroughly cleaned the magneto itself as well as the wheel. After replacing the magneto the trimmer starts for about 5 seconds (barely starts) and then shuts down. When it is trying to run sometimes I will give it a little gas and it just bogs out. I believe the problem might be the magneto gap. I used a piece of sandpaper to gap it (very unscientific and inaccurate). could this be the problem and if so do you know the gap specs for this trimmer? I believe it is a Mccullough 2816......one last thing I also put a new spark plug in as well as fresh gas and oil mix....same result.

Answer
 Hello Rob:

The Coil Gap is Set to .020in. However, I suggest from your Description that you Remove the Muffler and Check the Exhaust Port for Carbon Blockage. Check the Muffler and the Spark Arrestor Screen for Blockage. The Spark Arrestor Screen is In the Muffler. If these are Good, then Clean and Rebuild the Carburator. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
