Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): timing, starter clutch, foot pounds

Question
How do you set the timing on a 6.75 tecumseh push mower. The motor wont start an some times it has a hard recoil, it jerks the rope pull right out of your hand .
thanks for any help you can give me.

Answer
 Hello Robert:

From your Description, I suggest you Check the Flywheel Key. The Flywheel Key Times the Firing of the Plug. Remove the Blower Housing(metal engine cover). Remove the Starter Clutch or Bell(Depends on the Model). Using a Steering Wheel Puller, Remove the Flywheel. You Tighten the Puller and then Hit the Puller With a Hammer to Jar the Flywheel and Crankshaft. The Flywheel will Pop Up Most Times when it Comes Loose from the Crankshaft. The Flywheel Key is the Key that Lines the Flywheel with the Crankshaft. Replace this Key. Torque the Flywheel to 125 Foot Pounds. If you Require a Breakdown to Perform this Repair, Send me the Model Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. With the Numbers I May be Able to Locate a Breakdown for you to View Online and Assist you in this Repair. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully
