Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray lawn tractor transmission, murray lawn tractor, drive wheels

Question
I have a Murray 12/30 lawn tractor that works fine except that in 5th gear the transmission "surges". The transmission is fine in all the other gears (including reverse) but when 5th is engaged the power to the drive wheels falls off and returns cyclicly every second or so....resulting in a jerky forward motion. The engine does not falter during this occurance so it must be a problem in the transmission.....any ideas?

Answer
 Hello Doug:

From your Description it Sounds like a Broken Tooth on the 5th Gear Sprocket. Is this a Hydrostatic or Hydromatic Drive Transaxle or a Regular Transaxle? If yes, the Transaxle May be Low on Fluid. There should be a Plate on the Transaxle that has the Transaxle Manufacturers Name ant the Transaxle Numbers on it. With the Transaxle Manufacturer and Numbers I can view a Dreakdown of the Transaxle and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
