Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): ignition/electrical, gcad, hello jerry

Question
John:  Disconnected small wire to diode as you in- structed and engine fired right up and ran until I turned the ignition off!  Does this imply that only the diode is bad, at the moment?  What is the purpose of having the diode?

Question -
John - The engine data you asked for is as follows:

   model-GX620      type-VXA1

       serial #GCAD-2108722

My reference material shows that this engine does, in fact, have a stop diode component which is part #31740-ZJ1-861.

Question -
John:  My Honda 20hp Honda GX620 starts instantly on either gasoline or NG, runs for 1-2 seconds and then shuts down as smoothly as if the ignition key had been turned off.  It will repeat this cycle time and time again as long as you're willing to start it.  Checked carburator - no problem.  Checked air filter - no problem.  Checked spark plugs - no problem.  Used inline spark tester and found that the spark is shutting down on both cylinders at exactly 1-2 seconds after motor starts.  This would seem to indicate a common problem with both cylinder's ignition but I am not exactly where to proceed from here as this unit doesn't, to my knowledge, use CDI.  Could you plz point the way or possibly put a finger on the problem with the info I have provided.
Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

 Thx, Jerry.  ***

Answer -
 Hello Jerry:

Depending on the Model Type, your Engine May have a Shutdown Diode. This Diode is Used to Stop the Plugs from Firing. If the Diode is Bad it will cause the Problem you Described. If No Diode, then the Coil May be Bad or there May be a Bare Spot Worn into the Coil Wire. Send me the Model Type Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. With these I can View a Breakdown of the Engine and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Answer -
 Hello Jerry:

Disconnect the Small Wire from the Diode. Does the Engine Fire and Run? If No, then Change the Diode and Possiblly the Coil. Normally what Happens is the Coil will Overload the Diode and Both have to be Replaced. Sometimes the Diode itself is the Only Problem but Its been my Experience that when One goes, Both will have to be Replaced before you have the Problem Solved. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Answer
 Hello Jerry:

From your Description of things, the Diode is Bad. As for the Purpose, I have never Really gotten a Straight Answer from Honda on that One. I was told it Assist in Shutting the Coil Down. I have had a Lot of People Replace the Diode and Others have Run the Engine Without it. No One has Ever said what if any Problems they had Running the Engine Without the Diode Plugged in. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck
