Hello Eric, I have a old lawn tractor with a transmatic transmission on it and it only works in one speed, SLOW ! The speed lever moves fine and belts are good, also goes into forward and reverse fine, just cannot get it to change speed. Can you give me some insight as to how these work, I do not see anything that goes to the transmission itself to like change a gear or even a friction disk, any ifo would be GREATLY appretiated !! Thank You for your time ! Tony

What brand of mower do you have?

If you have 2 belts for the drive system then odds are you have a varialbe speed pulley.  Sometimes these pulleys wear and stop functioning correctly.

Let me know the brand of the mower and an approximate age so I can provide a better answer.

Answer
There is a variable pulley slightly in front/under the seat.  Remove the shift knob and a couple of screws to access the pulley.

MTD pulleys are pretty reliable but they do break once in a while.

I would start by replacing both belts.  Remove the pulley and lubricate the needles bearings and shaft.

Let me know if this helps.
