Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsmen Eager-1 6.75 hp mower, recoil starter, starter rope

Question
Dear John,

Thank you for your help.  The model number on the engine is 143.996704 and the family is WTPXS.2071BA.  Pictures or diagrams would be good because I don't know how to take a mower like this apart.

Respectfully,

Dan.

Hello John.  Thanks for considering my question.

I received a Craftsmen Eager-1 6.75 hp mower Model 917-377582 self-propelled freebie.
1) The mower says it's a one-pull start but the few times it ran it took many pulls before it would start and run.  I followed the 3X priming bulb as directed on the sticker but I can't tell if it was priming.  What should I look at to get it to start better?
2) The pull cord looks tangled up and is stuck when I pull on it so I can't start it at all.  Can I take it apart and fix it?  I do a fair amount of car work but never worked on a mower.

Answer -
 Hello Dan:

Send me the Model Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. The Numbers are for the Frame and Ground Drive. The Carburator needs to be Cleaned and Rebuilt. The Starter Rope needs to be Replaced. These Mowers are Mostly 3 or 4 Pumps on the Primer and They Start if the Carburator is Functioning Properly and the Compression and Fire are Correct. When I get the Engine Model Numbers I May be Able to Locate a Diagram of the Carburator and the Recoil Starter for you to View Online. I can Give Instructions on the Exact Carburator and Recoil Starter for your Engine. Thanks.

 Respectfully

 John

Answer
 Hello Dan:

Go to this Addy http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Engine Model Numbers. Follow the Directions to the View Illustrated Parts List. All my Contacts tell me the Carburator Cant be Rebuilt, that it Must be Replaced. I have been to Several Sites and None of Them Show Any Kits for this Carburator. I Sent an Email to Tecumseh and they Asked for 72 Hours to Respond. The Carburator is Approx $65.00 Plus Shipping. If you Wish, Send a Follow Up to this Question on 8/10/06 and I Should have an Answer from Tecumseh by then. The Illistrated Parts List will Show how to Remove the Recoil Starter. One the Recoil Starter is Removed, Cut and Remove the Old Rope from the Pulley. The Starter Doesnt Have to be Disassembled to Replace the Rope. Once the Old Rope is Out, Tie a Knot in One End of the New Rope. Turn the Pulley towards the Hole the Rope Will Exit the Housing Until the Pulley will No Longer Turn. Reverse the Pulley 1 Full turn or Until the Hole in the Pulley Lines Up with the Hole in the Housing. Push the New Rope Through the Pulley Hole and as the Rope Exits the Pulley, Line it Up so it Goes Through the Housing Hole. Pull the Rope all the Way Until the Knot is Snug Against the Pulley. Tie a Slip Knot in the Rope to Hold the Rope and Pulley while you Attach the Handle to the Rope. After the Handle is Attached to the Rope Release the Slip Knot. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
