Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh 5 hp engine carburetor settings, screw adjustment, hp engine

Question
I bought an almost unused machine with a Tecumseh 5 HP engine.  How do I set the carburetor to get it running properly?  I can get it running (not too well) withe the choke full on but as soon as I open the choke even a little it dies.  No matter where I set the screw adjustment in the bottom of the fuel resevoir it dies when the choke is opened.  Is there a magic process one goes through to set it up?

btw, the reason I changed the setting was that the float valve stuck and I had to clearit.  Yes, I know I shouldn't have fooled with it.

Answer
Hi Paul,

Below, are the settings for the mixture screws.  If the adjustments make no change to the engine's operation, I would suspect a gummed carb.  In that case you will need to disassemble it and completely clean out each small opening and passage.

Good luck,
Michael

The high speed mixture screw is initially set at 1 & 1/2 turns out.  Then adjust it to give good acceleration and top speed, while not closing the screw more than you need to.  The low speed mixture screw is set at 3/4 of a turn out.  Adjust that, to give a smooth idle.  The 3rd screw, the idle speed screw, is set to give a low idle speed without stalling.
