Mr. Jones,

I have a Murray Riding mower with a 17.5 hp briggs and dtraton engine.  My problem is is that it runs fine for about 10 minutes then it shuts off like turning off the switch.  It will not start until I let it sit for a hour and then it will crank up and run for another 10 minutes. I smell gas when it shuts off. Could you give me some ideas on what to do.

Replace the spark plug first.  If the problem continues then you need to check for spark as soon as the engine stops.  Carry a spark plug wrench with you...I would also carry a brand new spark plug with you and swap them out when it dies.
