Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): sears 5,5 hp lawnmower,, hp model, tecumseh engine

I have a Sears 5.5 hp model 143985506 lawnmower, I beleive it is a Tecumseh engine.  When I pull the cord to start it it is very difficult and when it starts to come to life the cord violently snaps back towards the engine.  I do have the bar at the top of the handle depressed all the way or it woulkd'nt pull at all.  Is there some king of decompression switch or lever I am missing? Thanks for your help

 Hello Paul:

 You need to Remove the Flywheel and Check the Flywheel Key. The Flywheel Key Times the Engine. Go to http://www3.sears.com/ and Click on Lawn Equipment. Follow the Directions to the View Diagram and View Parts List Page. Select the View Diagram. Number 89 on the Parts Diagram is the Flywheel Key. Also Check the Oil Level, if Overfilled it will Kick Back. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.
