Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Backfire on Craftsman 18 HP Riding Mower, blown head gasket, crankshaft pulley

Question
Hi John,

The Drive belt and mower belt pulley fell off the shaft of the Briggs and Stratton engine in my riding mower, due to the bolt falling out. I put the pulley back on, and replaced the bolt. I put the belts back on also.

I decided to do the annual maintanence on the mower at this time also. I changed fuel filter, oil filter, air filter and pre filter, spark plug, and changed the oil.

The problem that I am having is that now the mower is riding very rough, and vibrating alot more than it did before the bolt and pulley fell off. It is also backfiring, and belching out a thick plume of oily smoke on shutdown.

Do you have any suggestions on what may be wrong?

Thanks much.

Answer
 Hello Joe:

Did you Check the Pulley? Most of the Pulleys will Get Bent whenever the Situation you had Occurs. Did you Check the Crankshaft and Make sure that it Didnt Get Bent? Did you Overfill the Engine Oil? Also the Pulley will Cause this Problem on Shut Down. It is Throwing the Balance of the Engine Off. The Backfiring can be caused by a Bent Crankshaft Pulley, the Flywheel Key, Bad or Blown Head Gasket or Improper Gas to Air Mixture to the Engine.  Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
