Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman lawn tractor wont start, craftsman lawn tractor, jumper cables

Question
Hi John,
I recently replaced the mower deck belt on my 1999 Craftsman lawn tractor.  When I tried to start it afterwards, there was a "ping" noise and the engine wouldn't turn over, even though it had been running fine before the belt change.  On the second try, the flywheel continued to turn even after I turned the ignition key off.  Smoke started to come out near the starter, although I couldn't tell if it was from the starter or not, and I jumped off the tractor to kill the seat safety.  I cleaned and inspected the wiring and could find no sign of damage.  Now when I turn the key, there is only a click and the starter doesn't do anything.  Any advice you could offer would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Answer
 Hello Paul:

Remove the Blower Housing(metal engine cover). **BE CAREFULL MOVING PARTS** Take your Jumper Cables and Connect the Positive to the Positive on the Battery. Leave the Ground Jumper Alone. Take the Positive Jumper Cable End and FIRMLY Touch the Battery Post of the Starter. Does it Turn. If No, Remove the Belts from the Engine and Try Again. If No, the Starter needs to be Checked. If Yes, then Check the Components on the Deck for Binding. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
