Question -
I own a Craftsman LT1000 Riding Mower and it has worked flawlessy until now. Model #917.271920
Ser.#100702A018415

It will not move in forward but I can put it in reverse and it seems normal.  How do I dertermine if the transaxle is shot as Sears service has told me or if there are any sdjustments or checks I can perform myself? Are the transaxles serviceable or are they just a remove and replace item and are they available anywhere besides Sears? Is this a common problem with these mowers and do the manual transmissions more reliable?

 Hello Andrew:

I have had this Question a Lot Lately. Heres What May be your Problem. 1- Check the Linkage. A Lot of People are Finding the Linkage is the Problem. 2- Check the Frame and Mounting Bolts for the Transaxle. The Frame was Broken and the Bolts were Loose. I have had 2 with this being the Cause. To see if your Hydrostatic Transaxle is Serviceable, Look on Either Side of the Cooling Fan. If there Are Rubber Plugs, then you Can Service this Transaxle. HOWEVER, I dont suggest it. If this Unit Requires Oil Due to a Leak, then oil(80w90) can Be Added, 1 Pint at a Time. Thats ALL that the Home Owner can Really do to Service a Hydrostatic Transaxle. As for Getting a New Transaxle. I have Priced Several Different Companies and I Find that Sears is In Line with Everyone Else. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

If those things check out and it woks inreverse does that mean that the transaxle is bad?  Where besides SEARS might I find a transaxle since I know SEARS doesn't manufacter it and where would I get a part number ?

Answer
 Hello Andrew:

Did you check the Mount for the Control Valve Shaft. If the Control Arm is Slipping on this Shaft it Will Cause the Problem you Described. If it Still Moves in Reverse and Not Forward, then the Control Valve in the Transaxle is the Problem. As for Purchasing a New Transaxle, Contact http://www.smallenginedistributors.net/transaxles.html and they Should be Able to Assist you. The Transaxle Number will Depend on the Manufacturer of the Transaxle; Spicer/Dana, Peerless or Hydro Gear. Hydro Gear is in Most Craftsman Hydromatic/Hydrostatic Drive Mowers. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.
