Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sring rewinding, evinrude outboard motor, starter rope

Question
John, got the weedwacker working.  Now on to the evinrude.  That spring is not in position and must be coiled and matched up with the top housing in which it is anchored and then into the bottom part of the housing in which the end must go through a slot and thus holding the spring in place.  Might just have to work it until I match it up - not sure if there is a trick to holding the spring in place and then matching up with the bottom housing - in which it has to fit into a oval slot.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Question -
John, having two problems of a similar nature.  My craftsman weekwackers spring needs rewound - I can get it to work very slowly for a short period of time.  This problem also exists with my Evinrude outboard motor - appears there is a trick to rewinding the spring and creating the proper recoil - cannot figure out how you rewind the spring and then set it in place as needed.  Any advise would be appreciated.

 Hello Bill:

No Worries. Im Assuming that you have Had the Springs out and they Are Installed for the Correct Rotation. Just to be Sure, Im Going to Start With Looking at the Spring. Locate the Rope Hole and Position it so the Rope Will be on the Left or Right Side when you are Done. The Spring Winds Towards the Rope Hole. The Spring Should Coil Towards the Middle of the Starter Pulley. If the Spring is Installed so the Above Actions Occurrs, then Tighten the Spring by Turning the Starter Pulley Away From the Rope Hole. When the Spring is Tight, the Pulley will No Longer (Turn Approx 4 Turns). Slowly Bring the Pulley Back so as to Line Up the Rope Hole in the Pulley with the Rope Hole in the Blower Housing/Starter Housing. Hold the Pulley and Push the Rope through the Hole in the Pulley and Out through the Rope Hole. Tie a Slip Knot in the Starter Rope to Hold it From Returning all the Way Into the Housing When you Release the Pulley. Once the Slip Knot is tied you can Release the Pulley. the Slip Knot should Hold the Pulley While you Attach the Handle. Attach the Starter Handle and Release the Slip Knot. Install the Blower Housing/ Starter Housing back onto the Engine. This Works for ALL Horizontal Recoil Starters. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Hello Bill:

If I Understand you Corectly oyu will Need a Piece of Plastic Pipe that the Inside Diameter is the Same as or a Little Smaller than the Spring Housing Seat. Cut the Pipe to 1" in Lenght. Ciol the Spring Inside the Pipe. Set the Pipe and Spring into the Housing. Using a Socket the Same Size as the Inside of the Pipe, Push the Spring into Place. Make Sure to Align the Spring with the Catch Inside the Housing. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Hello Bill:

I just Saw an Outboard with the Old Style Recoil. If by Chance yours is the Old Style: Slide the Spring Through the Slot and Hook it Into the Pulley. Set the Pulley In Place and the Spring is Then Wound from the Outside of the Housing into the Housing. When the Outer End of the Spring Gets Close to the Slot; Slow Down and Hold the Outer End so It Does Not Jump Inside the Housing. Using the Pliers Guide the Spring End Into the Slotted Seat. Now Tighten the Sprig and Install the Rope as you did for the Trimmer. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.
