Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 16, HP Briggs No Spark, hp briggs, air gap

Question
Hi Allen,

I am trying to start a 16 Horse, 2 cylinder with a magnetron coil. All Wires are Isolated including the small coil ground wire, I also have new plugs. No Spark
I replaced the magnetron with a new one, still no spark. Both the new and old units show continuity to the laminated stack plates/ground.
Air gap is correct.
Is this the way it should be?

Answer
Hi Mike

Just make sure you haven't grounded the kill wire.  These units often have a couple of wires coming out the back- small black wires.  These wires will kill the spark if the are grounded.  They are normally part of a kill circuit to stop the engine.

Try hooking up just the spark plug and ground its base.  Leave all other wires open, spin the flywheel at least 250 rpm (this is the MINUMUM rpm required to achieve a spark) so if you have a weak battery or poor battery connection it won't spark either.
