Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Pulley Removal, gear puller, craftsmans

Question
Allen, I having a hard time getting the pulley off my B&S engine. It is for a Craftsmans 11 HP Lawn Tractor (917.255732). The engine is model #252707, type # 0669-02. I have tried to use a torch to heat it, a gear puller. I thought maybe it was treaded, but its doesn't seem so. Is it just press-fitted? Do I have to get a longer bolt to push it out? Can you help?

Answer
Hi Alex
Unfortunately, its not threaded.  This is the one area where I get angry at the manufacturers.  They don't put anti-sieze on at assembly (I don't know why) and over time, with vibration and whats called false brinelling, the pulley becomes practically welded to the shaft.  You'll find the rear wheels are pretty much the same.

Uh I gotta ask- why do you want to remove it?  Honestly, if you're replacing the engine, I'd take a grinder and cut it off.
