Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sears Lawn Tractor, friction pads, turn buckle

Question
I have a Craftsman 17.0HP, 42" Lawn tractor. The unit is relatively new (2003)and is not used commercially. The clutch does not disengage. The unit starts OK but the blades continue to turn even when the clutch is disengaged. Any suggestions on what I can do to remedy. The repair service is 3 weeks out and I cant wait that long

Answer
Hi Butch
There are friction pads on arms that are supposed to contact your mower deck pulleys when you dis-engage the mower lever.  They may be worn out- also- make sure the belt is the CORRECT belt- if its a tad short, it'll keep enough tension on the pulleys to keep turning, even when dis-engaged.  There IS an adjustment for this on the bottom end of the engagement lever.  A little turn-buckle thing that sets belt tension.  Loosen it and your problem may be fixed- lemme know how it goes!
