Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S quantum 6.0 oil blowing, excess oil, oil level

Question
My 4 year old lawnmower has blew oil out the muffler when I started it this year. I need to know what the most likely cause is and where I can get a repair guide and parts. I feel that I may be capable of repair on my own. And would love to do it. Where do I start?

Answer
Hi Angela,

Sometimes oil comes from the muffler when it is tipped on it's side.  In that case, the excess oil will burn off.  Or, an overfilled crankcase will push excess oil out the exhaust.  Check the oil level and if okay, try running it for 5 minutes or so to see if it stops smoking.  If no change, let me know.
