Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tiller Wont Start, spark plug gap, briggs and stratton

Question
John,
I sanded the condenser tip and points with fine sandpaper. I also replaced the flywheel key as it seemed a little sloppy.
I can now get it to fire if I remove the air filter and put my hand over the opening while starting. It fires and pops back through the air breather opeing. Then, if I crank it a time or two it will fire and pop and shoot a flame back through the air filter opening. But, it will not run. It sounds like the timing may be off. I changed the spark plug gap to .025 and .035. But, that didn't seen to help.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Charles

Question -
I have an old tiller with a Briggs and Stratton, model 100202 that will not start. It's getting  fuel, but, will not fire. I have replaced the spark plug with a Champion CJ-8 and set the gap to .030 as recommended by Paul Dempsey in his book Briggs and Stratton Repair.. That didn't help. So, I replaced the condenser and points and set the gap to .020. It still wouldn't fire. So, I replaced the coil and set the gap at .010.
That didn't help either. I am running out of ideas now. Can you suggest anything else I can try?
Thanks,
Charles Johnson

 Hello Charles:

Since you have Replaced the Coil you will know what I am asking you to do. Remove the Coil Shut Off Wire and Check for Fire. If no Fire, Go Back to the Pionts and Clean the Contacts with the Fine Side of a Finger Nail File. Sometimes when the Point Set is Sitting for a While on the Shelf, a Film Forms over the Contact Points. Always Clean the Contact Points on a Point Set Before Installing. Everything you Did was By the Book and was Correct. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck

Answer
 Hello Charles:

Good, we have Fire. From what Im Reading; I would Suggest Cleaning and Overhauling the Carburator. If the Carburator Isnt the Cause, then The Valves May be Burnt. Im Leaning Towards the Carb. Try to Run the Engine for 20 to 30 SECONDS with Starter Fluid If it Will Run With the Starter Fluid, then the Carb is 100% the Cause. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck
