Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Wheel puller needed for 7hp b&s lawnmower?, briggs stratton, drive pulley

Question
Allen, thanks for the support and your explanation of the key's purpose. The model # is 917375830 and the serial # 050306M007653.

After a couple of trips to Sears and Sears service, I discovered that a belt was $9.00 and shipping was $6.00 for "special order". I ju st bought it 2 weeks ago. If I went on-line Sears will send the part to the store of your zip code "no charge". The stores are not able to order parts , only the service locations or the consumer. At the service center I encounter a 45 minute wait only to discover a Non-Refundable diagnostic fee paid now, the mower will be shipped  from Richmond VA to MD and will be repaired in approximately 2 weeks and I must Pre-Approve Parts   $24.95 and Labor repair $110. That's $165.00 up front before I know anything concrete. At $525.00 total cash outlay for alittle more cash I could upgrade to a rider mower.

Here's what I did. After reading your response,I called my mechanic and borrowed his wheel puller the largest one he had and resolved the "Key" issue. The pulley adjustment I discovered by following the cable back to the control handle, disassembling it and turning the nut to tighten the cable to the gear drive pulley.

Total out of pocket expense $3.00 and a day of inquire. Total repair time 3 hours.

Thanks again I was afraid I had ruined the crankshaft but what was key was the key then I was really to rumble.

Do I need a wheelpuller to remove the disc under the flywheel to realign the "pins" after hitting a sneaky rock?

Answer -
Hi Lisa-
Do you know the make/model of this mower?

Hiya Lisa
Uhmm- there isn't a 730 series, is this a 7021 or 70R21, something like that?

First- there are NO adjustments for the belt on these mowers.  When it begins to slip- you need a new belt.

I'm not clear on where you're at with this after hitting a rock- the actual flywheel is the last thing you'd remove (its heavy and has fins on it) and you will need a puller to remove it.  Are the "pins" you mentioned the key on the flywheel?

The key in the center of the flywheel (looking down at it)sets the timing of the engine.  Shear it, bent it, distort it even a tiny bit (by hitting an object hard) will prevent the engine from running.  Its there to protect your crankshaft.  Strike an object, the heavy flywheel, turning quickly, would destroy your engine if there weren't some way to "de-couple" it from the rest of the motor.  The key serves this purpose- like a mechanical fuse.

Unless you have some mechanically inclined person to assist you, and/or have a good basic tool set, you'd be better served to take this to a good shop.  They can make this repair fairly quickly.

Lemme know what you decide ok?

Answer
Lisa - way to go!  Very smart move adjusting the take up cable for the belt drive!  Congratulations!  (And I had no idea Sears had gotten that bad on labor prices and customer service! Sheesh)

Excellent job on the key replacement as well- you have all the symptoms of a person who has empowered themselves.  Felt good didn't it?  When you realized you were in fact in control of the situation.

Hope you drop me a line again someday- & Way To Go!
