Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Gas mixed with Oil in B&S 28v707, brigs stratton, little gasoline

Question
John,

Thanks for the quick response.  All is well, I installed that shutoff, and hopefully I will get many months use out of that mower now.

One more question.  I disconnected the spark plug and removed the battery to clean the terminals up.  After I re-installed the battery, I closed the cover and started the mower up (forgetting to re-connect the plug wire to the spark plug).  The mower started right up. How can that happen?

I remembered that I didn't do it, opened the cover and the wire was just hanging there.

Thanks again,
Lou

Question -
John,

I just acquired a Murray Select 1 with a Brigs & Stratton Model 28v707 engine.  The friend that gave it to me came back from vacation and attempted to cut his grass until the mower began to blow white smoke all over the place and he noticed oil on the cuting deck.  He gave that mower to me and went out and bought a new tractor.

I took the mower and drained the oil.  Not only did oil come out, but gasoline came out along with it.  What would cause gasoline to be mixed with the oil like that?

After draining, I removed the cutting deck according to the instructions and cleaned that all up.  I replaced the oil with SAE30 according to instructions, started it up, and after blowing out what little gasoline was left (white smoke) the mower began to run fine.

Is it possible something is still wrong or will I begin to enjoy a new riding mower, basically acquired free of charge?

Thanks,
Lou

Answer -
 Hello Lou:

It sounds like the Most Common Problem with Riding Mowers these days. Install a Cut Off Valve in the Fuel Line to Stop the Flow of Gas to the Carb when Mower is not in use. When the Mower is sitting  not in use the Fuel Seeps past the Float Needle and Floods the Carb. The Gas then Goes into the Cylinder and Seeps Past the Rings into the Crankcase. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck

 John

Answer
 Hello Lou:

The Spark was Jumping the Air Gap Between the Coil Lead and The Plug Top. If the Coil Lead is Close Enough this will Happen. Hope this Helps. Thanks for using this Service. If I can Help again Please Contact me.
