Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snapper Rider - Starter stuck, using jumper cables, snapper rider

Question
The battery is ok. I took off the starter and still can't move the flywheel with my hand.

With the starter off, when I turn the key the solenoid under the seat makes a clicking noise but nothing else happens.

Question -
I have a 15 year old Snapper rear rider w/ 8HP B&S engine. The battery goes dead every 3-4 weeks. I think there must be a short because it accumulates corrosion on the battery terminals very quickly.

This time it went dead and after charging the flywheel would not turn. Usually you can turn it with your hand. Now it seems stuck and won't budge.

I took the cover off and the starter gear is engaged. Isn't it supposed to be away from the flywheel gear unless you turn the key?

When I turn the key it just makes a click but not like a dead battery. The starter gear moves but doesn't go anywhere and the flyweel doesn't move. Is this a starter or battery problem? How do I troubleshoot it?

 Hello Mark:

1- Have the Battery Tested for a Dead Cell. 2- Remove the Starter Enough to Loosen it From the Flywheel and see if you can turn the Engine. If you can, then Replace the Starter. If not Contact me Again and we can go Further with the Diagnostics. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

Answer
 Hello Mark:

You should be able to Turn the Engine By Hand. Remove the Belt/Belts from the Engine Pulley and See if the Engine will Turn by Hand. Also the Starter has to have a Ground Wire to the Engine to Test it if it is Off the Engine. Using Jumper Cables, Attach the Cables to a Good Battery. Attach the Positive Cable to the Starter Post and the Negative End to the Starter Housing. There will be Sparks and the Starter Should Turn. If Not, the Starter is Bad. If you can turn the Engine by had After Removing the Belt/Belts, then the Deck has a Frozen Idler or Quill Assembly. If after Removing the Belt/Belts the Engine Doesnt Turn, Remove the Spark Plug and Try to Turn the Engine. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck
