Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Trans-axel lubricant, craftsman 917, purpose grease

Question
I have a Craftsman 917.270532 with a Spicer trans-axel. Water has somehow gotten into my trans case, I'm cleaning everything out now but wanted to be sure the lubricant is axel grease. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Allen

Answer
Hi Keith
If its a hydro-static transaxle- you have to use the grease specified by the manufacturer.  Thats usually called  an L2 all purpose grease or equvalent

If its a gear box type transaxle, 90 weight gera oil will work very well.

The grease IS special, not just axle grease,
