Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): transmission slips in reverse, rear end, lawn mower

Question
I have a toro 1232XL ridng lawn mower. It runs and cuts good. The only problem i have with it is it when you put it in reverse it will back up and then it will quit pulling pulling. I was wondering if it is something wrong with the transmission. Do you know what could be the problem?

Answer
I believe you tractor is a rear engine rider.  If this is correct then you have a small 600 or 700 series Peerless/Tecumseh gear box.  Inside the gear box it a small chain for reverse drive...this chain is known to break and cause reverse problems.

Before tearing into the gear box I would thoroughly clean/wash the rear end, gear box and associated parts.  Check the rear end, the mounting bolts and mak sure they are not causing the problem.  I would also check the belt to ensure it is not slipping.

Let me know what you find.
