Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Pull Start spring, slip knot, th spring

Question
How do I install a pull start spring and cord on an old B&S 3 hp push mower?  I have the new parts but the spring is in a metal "holder" and is compressed.

Answer
 Hello Norman:

If you Look at the Blower Housing, you will see where the Spring Hooks into the Housing. Bend the Tab Ears Holding the Pulley into the Housing and Remove the Pulley. Feed th Spring through the Hole in the Housing and Hook it into the Pulley. Carefully Place the Pulley back into the Housing and then Turn Slowly until the Spring Slides into the Housing and Locks into the Smaller Section of the Holder Slot. Bend the Pulley Retainer Ears Back Level with the Pulley (not tight against the Pulley). Once the Pulley is in place, then Wind the Pulley Until the Spring is Completely tight. Reveerse Pulley 1 Full Turn. Now Feed the Rope thru the Pulley and into the Rope Hole of the Blower Housing. Once the Rope is thru the Hole in the Blower Housing put a Slip Knot in the Rope to Prevent it from being pulled back into the Blower Housing. Put the Handle on the Rope and Release the Slip Knot. the Rope and Spring should work Properly now. Replace the Blower Housing onto the Engine. **MAKE SURE YOU WIND THE SPRING THE RIGHT DIRECTION.** Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully
