Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman mower self propelled, starter rope, hello mike

Question
I have a 4 y/o mower which has been very reliable. I went to start this a.m. and found that it would not start and it is very difficult to pull the starter rope. Oil level is fine and gas is new. I am worried about cylinder lock.

Any advice for the novice?

Answer
 Hello Mike:

1- Smell the Oil and See if you smell Gas. If so the Carb Needle Stuck and Flooded the Cyliner. If it hasnt been Run, then Change the Oil and it should Loosen Up and Start. 2- Is the Engine Brake Releasing. Follow the Engine Stop/Brake Cable to the Covered Assembly. Remove the Cover. Is the Brake Spring Getting Pulled when the Engine Stop/Brake Lever is Operated? If no the Cable needs Replacing. 3- Check The Crankshaft for Windings. Rags, Rope ect Wrapped around at the Engine Block. If no Problems found with the Items Listed above, then it is in the Cylinder. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully
