Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): timing problems, 2 different things, flywheel

Question
I had to replace the magneto it got ate up when some magnets came loose not sure if it needed to be turned a certain way or not.I tried cranking it and it was firing out the carb. Is there a right way to align the crank and cam or can I have it out 180 I lined up the dots but not sure if it is right. HELP!!!!!!!!!

Answer
 Hello William:

Slow Down Please. You are talking about 2 different things; the Magneto (Coil) and the Cam. If you Replaced the Magneto (coil) then Set it .020 away from the Flywheel. The Flywheel Key is what Times the Engine. If you are Talking about the Cam; which is on the Inside of the Engine; then the Crankshaft and Cam have Marks that Line up Tooth to Gap. If it Continues to fire out the Intake, then Check for a Bad Valve. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully
