Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): broken rod, briggs stratton engines, briggs and stratton

Question
Hello Again,

Just got the mower back from the shop, it is a Briggs and Stratton 12.5 HP.  I believe the model number is 28V707 or 1113-E.  Where is the best place to find a new engine?

BTW the engine does run while sitting but as soon as I start mowing the lawn it dies on me.

Thanks again for you help.

Hello Allen,

I took my riding mower in for a tune up and to see why it cut off on me while I was mowing a few weeks back and they came back and told me the engine had a bad knock in it and that the rod was broken, bottom line, I needed a new engine.  I am pretty good mechanically and wanted to know how difficult it would be to do it myself and if it's even worth it.
Mower is still at the repair shop I will have it back next week.

Hiya Caroline
Most mower engines are pretty east to replace.  Drop the deck, remove the drive belt, unbolt the drive pulley off the engine shaft (one bolt on the end), 4-bolts holding the engine, pull the starter wires, gas line voila le engine, she comes off.
Now- that being said, there are some things to look out for.  Briggs & Stratton engines are piece of cake.  Replacements are cheap.  Kohlers are also easy, but expensive.  Tecumsehs are a little more difficult because they like to mess around with engines from year to year.  What kind do you have?
Lemme know- and bravo for willingness.  :)

Couple options.
1- there are a couple engines on ebay right now that would fit your application- bolt right up.  One is a 14.5hp the other is a 12.5, but either's gonna run ya 150-200$ all said N done with shipping, and you'll still have to install it (you may also have to unbolt their muffler N bolt yours on- there are some variances here depending on who's namebrand mower the engine went into).

Unless your block was trashed, your engine can be rebuilt,  they sell crank kits that come with new rods and everything.  Big plus here is they do it all for ya (maybe you should find another shop to get another quote)

Rebuilding your engine yourself I wouldn't recomend.  You'd spend any savings just on acquiring tools for the job.
Have that block torn down and checked by a shop with a good reputation.
Lemme know ok?
