Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman 18.5 AVS will not start, fly wheel, battery cables

Question
John,
I replaced the starter gear drive, but it is still doing the same thing? Could the starter itself already be bad? The tractor is less then 2 years old.

Question -
My tractor will not start. When I turn the key the starter will spin, but it will not go up into the fly wheel and start the tractor?

Answer -
 Hello Michael:

The Starter Drive Gear may be Stripped on the Inside of the Gear. Remove the Starter Drive Gear and Inspect the Starter Gear and the Starter itself and Ensure the Grooves for the Starter Gear isnt Worn Down or Broken. The Drive Gear may also be Stuck. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

Answer
 Hello Michael:

If the Starter is Turnin Fast enough it Should Spin the Starter Drive Gear up into the Flywheel. If the Replacement of the Drive Gear didnt work then the Starter isnt turning Fast enough to make the Drive Engage the Flywheel. Replace the Starter. If this Mower is only 2 yrs Old, then the Battery Cables may not be Handling the Current Required by the Starter. If this is the Case; also Replace the Battery Cables with Larger Diameter Cables. The larger the Diameter the Cable the Better AMP Flow to the Starter. I Replace ALL my Customers Cables and most Starters Last about 5 yrs or more. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck
