Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Wont start, compression gauge, time and patience

Question
Hi Mike

I wrote to you earlier about the problem with my Murray 6HP self propelled 3 in 1 mower not starting.

I managed to get the flywheel off and the pin or key looks ok to me but then again, I don't know exactly what I'm looking at. I dont see any sign of damage at all. I do know this, it easier to pull the cord now than it was before. Is that a sign that I've lost compression? The motor and blade still turn as I try to crank. Any way to check the compression? Will a auto compression gauge work? Anything else you suggest? Thanks for your time and patience!

Steve

Answer
Hi Steve,

The key usually is sheared in half or partially sheared when damaged.
Yes, you can check compression with an auto guage.  Look for at least 75 psi.  150 would be ideal.

I'm not sure what we discussed before.  If you send me the date, I can look up our past queston and answer.
